You probably have heard by now about U.S. most loved boating and fishing electronic devices - the Hummingbird Fish Finders. They come in various models and sizes, with more or less capabilities. In this report I will speak only about the Hummingbird depth finder in the 900 series, putting into view their advantages.

There are two fish finders/chartplotters in the 900 series: the Hummingbird 998c SI Combo, the one that I like the most, the one unit that I also have currently mounted on my boat, and the Hummingbird Fish Finder 958c Combo.

Ok, let's take a look at the advantages of these two Hummingbird fish finders and chartplotters.

1. First of all, they are cheaper than the ones in the 1100 series. Although they have smaller screen, they pretty much have all the capabilities of their bigger brothers in the 1100 series. And of course, they are quite a bit cheaper. That's why I got the 998c SI Combo one.

2. The Hummingbird Fish Finder 998c SI Combo has both Side Imaging and Down Imaging which makes it a super performant tool for finding fish. It provides with with clarity images of what's under and around your boat and you'll be able to locate fish or any other structure or object underwater in minutes.

3. Both fish finders in this series are equipped with a powerful sonar which has a down penetration of up to 1500 ft. Of course, the returns in waters that deep are available only in SwitchFire mode. The images in SI and DI mode are reliable only for waters up to 150ft deep.

4. Even if the Hummingbird fish finder 958c Combo does not have Side Imaging and Down Imaging, it does have the same navigational capabilities as the first one. They both are compatible with the Navionics and LakeMaster maps and charts and both have the built-in ContourXD mapping system.

5. Last but not least, you can make waypoints with these units just as with most of the performant ones, and always return in those spots that you have marked for fishing. They can store up to 3,000 waypoints, 50 routes and 50 tracks (20,000 points each track). They have external 50 channel GPS and Ethernet capabilities. Therefore, you will be able to share waypoints with other Hummingbird Fish Finders and even if you haven't been on a certain lake before, you will know where the big ones are, from the waypoints made by other fishermen.
